Christians, what about the Lord's Prayer?

It's a given among Christians that God is good and benevolent. Yet, in the Lord's prayer Christians ask that God "lead us not into temptation". Isn't this rather odd? God is all good and benevolent on the one hand, but he apparently sometimes leads us into the path of sin on the other. Doesn't this contradiction say something about what Christians have been historically taught about God and what Jesus actually said about God?
